Oriens Chamber Music Competition 2024

The Oriens Music Competition aims to acquaint the younger generation to music with unique Asian influences, fostering a global perspective among young musicians.


This chamber music competition consists of two stages: a preliminary round through video submission, and a final round held live at the auditorium of the Culture Center of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston.

Important Dates and Fees 
February 1 - 29, 2024: early registration, $90 per ensemble
March 1 -10, 2024: regular registration, $100 per ensemble 
March 15, 2024: video submission Deadline
March 31, 2024: preliminary results announced via email and on Facebook 
April 14, 2024: the final round and award ceremony at the Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Center at Houston, Texas. 

Videos submitted on or after March 16, 2024, will be disqualified from the competition.

Rating Criteria 
•    Participants will be assessed on musical interpretation, clarity & technique, ensemble sound and unity, performance presentation, and artistry.
•    An audition panel will review submissions. Their decisions are final, and comments will be available upon request.

Competition Awards
Prizes include first, second, third place, special awards, and an audience favorite award, determined by the number of competing ensembles.

 

 

First Prize: $500
Second Prize: $300
Third Prize: $200 

Special awards and Audience Award: to be announced.

 

 

APPLICATION RULES
Please thoroughly review this document and gather all required information for each ensemble member before beginning the online registration.


•    Ensemble members must be 18 or younger on April 14, 2024.
•    Participants are permitted to be part of multiple ensembles.
•    Each ensemble entry should consist of 3 to 6 musicians.
•    Ensembles may include multiple players but are limited to one piano per ensemble. 
•    Instrumentation comprises violin, viola, cello, string bass, harp, and piano. Contact us if your instrument isn't listed; we will confirm eligibility through email.
•    Ensemble must maintain consistent instrumentation for both music selections.
•    No personnel changes allowed after entry submission.
•    All registration fees are non-refundable.
•    Prepare the following ensemble member details for online submission: date of birth, school attended, sponsor’s email and phone number, ensemble website and social media handles (if applicable), and a color group portrait in landscape and a brief group biography. Failing to meet these requirements will result in disqualification.

Video Recording Requirements 
•    Two public YouTube links, one for each music selection.
•    Unedited recordings: movements recorded in one take, audio from the same take (external microphone optional).
•    Continuity: movements recorded entirely but breaks allowed between them. Attacca movements with timestamps.
•    No editing: videos must not be edited or spliced.
•    Quality: encouraged to use an external microphone for better sound quality.
•    Ensemble performance: all members must be visible together in the same space throughout the recording.
•    Visuals: stationary picture without panning, close-ups, or school affiliations.
•    Resolution: minimum 1280x720 (720p).
•    Video uploading instructions will be provided post-registration and payment completion. Please ensure the video title starts with Oriens 2024, followed by the ensemble name, composer name, work, and movement. For example: 
Oriens 2024: Texas Piano Trio, Beethoven, Piano Trio in C major, Op. 1 No. 1, M
